Every player. Every family. Every path to the ice.
Financing High School Ice Hockey
Hockey is worth it. We want to make sure it stays that way for every family.
Ice time, officials, coaching, equipment — running a quality program costs real money, and we don't pretend otherwise. What we do promise is that DHSHA will always work hard to keep those costs as manageable as possible, and that no player will be turned away because of finances alone. Here's everything you need to know about how fees work and what options are available to you.
Transparent. Intentional. Revisited every year.
Because costs shift from season to season, the DHSHA Board reviews and sets player fees each summer before the upcoming season begins. The goal is simple: cover what it actually costs to run a strong program, as fairly as possible.
Each year, the Board weighs the full picture of anticipated expenses, including:
- Ice time and locker room rental
- Referee and athletic trainer fees
- Coaching costs
- Supplies and administrative expenses
- The number of players and teams participating
Once fees are finalized, families are notified ahead of the season. Payment collection typically opens in August and runs through October, giving families time to plan.
We'll meet you where you are.
DHSHA offers flexible payment plans so the cost of the season doesn't have to land all at once. Families paying by credit card or ACH can set up a payment schedule directly through the website. If you need more flexibility — or prefer to pay by cash, check, or Venmo — reach out to a team trustee and we'll work something out.
We also run fundraising opportunities throughout the year that players and parents can participate in together. A portion of what's raised goes directly toward reducing player fees. Working the Schmidt's stand at the State Fair and participating in the Dublin Irish Festival are two fan favorites — spots fill fast, so keep an eye out for announcements and sign up early.
Every player who wants to be Irish deserves a path to the ice.
We mean it. The cost of hockey should never be the reason a player sits out.
In addition to payment plans and fundraising, DHSHA offers a scholarship program for families who need extra help. It's confidential, it's handled with care, and there's no shame in using it — that's exactly why we built it.
Scholarship support can be applied toward player fees and, in some cases, equipment costs. Applications open each September. If your family needs assistance, please reach out — you'll be met with respect, not judgment.
Our goal hasn't changed since day one: make sure every kid who wants to play has a way to do it.
Real questions. Straight answers. No runaround.
Who can apply for financial assistance?
Any DHSHA family who feels the cost of participation is a barrier is encouraged to apply. There's no threshold you have to hit and no perfect situation required — if you have a need, we want to hear from you.
What does the scholarship cover?
Scholarships are primarily applied toward player fees. Depending on available funding and individual circumstances, assistance may also extend to certain equipment costs.
Is the application process confidential?
Completely. Every application is handled with discretion and respect. Only a small number of designated individuals ever see a request — your privacy matters to us.
When does the application open?
The application process typically opens in September. Families will receive communication with everything they need to apply when the time comes.
Do we still need to participate in fundraising or volunteer activities?
We encourage all families — including those receiving scholarship support — to participate in fundraising and volunteer opportunities when they're able to. These efforts are what keep the program strong and costs manageable for everyone. Every contribution counts, big or small.
What if I’m not sure whether we qualify?
Apply anyway, or reach out to a team trustee for a conversation. We're not here to screen people out — we're here to help you find the right path. There's no wrong question to ask.
Can we combine a scholarship with a payment plan?
Absolutely. Many families use a combination of payment plans, fundraising, and scholarship support together — that's exactly what these options are designed for. Use whatever combination works best for your family.
Who should I contact with questions?
Reach out to your team trustee or any DHSHA board member. We're real people who want to help — don't hesitate to start a conversation.
