Financing High School Ice Hockey
Financing High School Hockey
We all enjoy watching our players compete in the sport they love. As parents and guardians, we invest a great deal of time, energy, and support to make those opportunities possible—and it shows every time they take the ice.
At DHSHA, we also recognize that ice hockey is a significant financial commitment. Costs such as ice time, officials, athletic training, equipment, and program operations all contribute to the overall expense of running a high-quality hockey program. As a result, the financial responsibility for families can be substantial.
Because of this, we are committed to helping families better understand options and resources that can make participation more accessible. The following sections are designed to provide practical ways to manage, reduce, and offset the costs associated with high school hockey.
How Fees are Determined
Because costs can vary from year to year, the DHSHA Board reviews and sets player fees each summer in preparation for the upcoming season. This process is designed to ensure transparency and fairness while supporting a strong and sustainable program.
In determining annual fees, the Board carefully considers a number of anticipated expenses, including:
- Ice time
- Locker room rental
- Referee and athletic trainer fees
- Coaching costs
- Supplies and administrative expenses
- The number of players and teams participating
These projected costs are combined to establish the season fee per player. Once finalized, families are notified of the upcoming season’s fees.
Payment collection typically begins as early as August and continues through October, allowing families time to plan accordingly.
Options to Help
DHSHA is committed to helping make high school hockey as accessible as possible for our families. To support this, we offer several options to help manage and offset the cost of participation, including flexible payment plans and fundraising opportunities.
Payment plans are available to help spread out the financial impact of season fees. Families paying by credit card or ACH can set up a payment schedule directly through the website. If you need additional flexibility—or plan to pay by cash, check, or Venmo—please reach out to a team trustee to discuss options and make arrangements.
In addition, DHSHA organizes fundraising opportunities throughout the year that both parents/guardians and players can participate in. A portion of the funds raised goes directly toward reducing player fees. Popular events such as working the Schmidt’s stand at the State Fair or participating in the Dublin Irish Festival are great examples.
Be sure to watch for announcements about these opportunities and sign up early—spots can fill quickly, and they’re a great way to contribute while helping offset costs.
Scholarship Program
At DHSHA, we believe that every player who wants to be part of our hockey community should have the opportunity to do so. We understand that the cost of high school hockey can be significant, and we want families to know that support is available—and that it’s okay to ask for it.
In addition to payment plans and fundraising opportunities, DHSHA offers a scholarship program to help families who may need additional assistance. This program is designed to reduce financial barriers so that players can fully participate, grow, and enjoy the game alongside their teammates.
We encourage all families to take advantage of available cost-saving options and to stay engaged with the program through volunteering and community support. At the same time, if your family needs extra help, please know that requesting assistance is handled respectfully and with care.
Scholarship support may be used toward player fees and, in some cases, equipment costs. Each September, DHSHA opens a confidential application process for families who would like to be considered.
Our goal is simple: to make sure every interested player has a path to the ice.
